BAFOL's PC Lab

Welcome to The Booker Autism Foundation of Learning's PC Lab!

This is the homepage for BAFOL's PC Lab. Here, we will be posting summaries of our upcoming lesson plans, as well as any videos and website links we will be using in our lessons, to help with parent and student access to all content, both in the lab and at home.

We are very excited to meet our students and parents! Our computer classes are going to be flexible, where the children set the pace. Sometimes we will get through lessons quickly, while others we may linger on. We expect our students to have a different level of skills coming in to our class, and plan to use that to our advantage. While we lead our students through our lessons, we will asked the older children, or more experienced children, to help with some of the younger and/or less experienced kids. Everyone has a different way of learning. Some learn by seeing, some learn by reading, and some learn by doing. We will be using all three of these methods to help our students build the skills and knowledge that will help them in school and in life.

Here at BAFOL, we encourage parental involvement. We would be pleased to have parents join their child in class, but for those that cannot join us, we will put summeries of the current and coming lesson plans here on our homepage. If you have any questions or would like to recommend topics or skills you would like your child to work on here in the lab, please feel free to Contact Us any time.

The Internet: The Good and The Bad

Gone are the days of walking to the library to pour over encyclopedias to research topics for class. The Internet has changed the way we access information, and has put the world at our fingertips. When I was younger and my young mind wandered, I only had my parents to go to with all of my questions. "What is the longest road in the world?" "How many moons are there in our solar system?" "How many cats are there in the world?" The questions could go on forever. Now that I am a parent myself, I realize that while our parents weren't ignorant, they still just couldn't have had access to all of the information a young mind might crave.  Now, the amount of knowledge we now have access to with just a simple search is quite amazing, and it's a great tool for children to have in their quest for knowledge. There's not just answers the internet gives us, either. There's games (duh!), funny videos, "how to" guides/videos, there's many different skills and tools to help people be successful in school and in life.

But for all the good that the internet was designed to do, there are a few dangers our children need to be aware of so they can stay safe online. Our first lesson will start with teaching our students about the different type of things the internet offers us, other than games and funny cat videos, and will focus on how to keep themselves and their compluter safe.
